Why Get (UN)Bent?

Are you sitting down right now? Notice how you’re positioned. Are you leaning more into one side or sitting in a neutral alignment? Can you tell?

We’ve all seen people with noticeably poor posture—bent sideways, hunched forward, or held in other strained positions. What’s less obvious is that many of these patterns could be improved—or even prevented—if addressed through a structurally integrative lens.

Two common contributors are sagittal imbalance and pelvic obliquity. Sagittal imbalance occurs when the natural curves of the spine flatten or become exaggerated, shifting the body’s center of gravity. Pelvic obliquity—when one hip sits higher or rotates forward—may seem subtle at first, but over time, these patterns can lead to significant discomfort and even adult degenerative scoliosis.

“Leveling the head and the tail,” as taught by my late teacher, Dr. Erik Dalton, is a cornerstone of my work. When we talk about good posture, the importance of balancing the head over the pelvis and the pelvis over the feet cannot be stressed enough. When the base is off-center, the body reorganizes through compensatory patterns to stay upright and keep the eyes level with the horizon.

In my work, I often begin by asking: “Is the pelvis rotated? Is one hip higher than the other?” From there, it becomes clear how the body has adapted—through the spine, rib cage, shoulders, and especially the feet—to maintain balance in gravity. What we see isn’t just a curve, but a full-body pattern.

Treatment often begins with an aim to achieve specific outcomes: get the best alignment from the feet to the pelvis, lift and organize the ribcage over the pelvis, ease spinal restrictions, and ease the neck.

The takeaway is simple: addressing postural imbalances periodically can reduce uneven loading on the spine and help prevent degenerative patterns. When the foundation is more balanced, the entire body has a better chance to organize with less strain, better adaptability, and functional ease.
